New Election Possible In Venezuela

Dear Friends,
If Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez dies before January 10th of next year, a new election will be called within 30 days, according to the South American country’s constitution.
The possibility surfaced after one news report concluded: “All signs are pointing to his health failing him very, very soon.” Chavez’s vice president, Nicolas Maduro added: “it was a difficult and complex operation.”
The 58-year-old socialist leader has had four cancer operations in Cuba since mid-2011, the last one coming Tuesday, December 11, when he returned to Havana to receive treatment normally used to alleviate bone decay from radiation therapy, according to a British news service.
Re-elected for a third time October 7th and scheduled to be sworn in January 10th, Chavez's new six-year term would extend through February of 2019 if he survives and is able to take the oath of office.
One might also ask another important question about Chavez.
Why be treated in Havana rather than by superior doctors in Venezuela?
Here is for us what seems like a logical answer.
In Cuba, all information related to his true physical condition can easily be controlled by the Communist government.
Chavez reportedly feared that would not be the case in Caracas, Venezuela’s capital, despite his many attempts to control the press there.

A POSITIVE SIDE OF U.S. ELECTION

There is a positive side to Barack Obama’s re-election as president of the United States. And we believe to have learned that from our Latin American experience.
To know about the region, it’s helpful to know a second language in order to help get to the heart of how those in Latin America think and operate. Without Spanish, in our opinion, it’s more difficult to get there.
Obama’s election for the second time opens an incredible opportunity for a real discussion about African Americans and slavery in the United States. To date, in our opinion, such a discussion has yet to really begin.
Most--both black and white--have feared to talk about those responsible for slavery in the United States. Here is what history tells us.
Blacks in Africa sold slaves to the English and French, who brought them for use in Brazil and the United States.

Cuba’s Communist Party newspaper Granma has just announced travel restrictions on Cubans will be lifted on January 14th of next year.
Maybe that’s so but we’ll wait until then to know if the Caribbean Communist government is serious.
A lot of it could depend on who is elected President of the United States next month.
If Barack Obama is re-elected, the restrictions will likely be lifted. If Gov. Mitt Romney is elected, those restrictions might not be.
This is our opinion, of course. And here is why.
Remember Cuba’s dictator Fidel Castro first imposed those restrictions in 1959.
And according to Granma, the action was necessary because of what Castro called an illegal economic blockade imposed by the United States.
In our view, if Obama is elected he might drop the blockade as a part of a larger plan to move America further to the left politically.
If Romney is elected, he might keep the blockade as part of a larger plan to move America further to the right to correct our nation’s failing economy.

BACK IN CUBA, MAYBE

Dear Friends,
Cuban President Raul Castro visited China, Vietnam and finally Russia in July. And a French-language newspaper, 'Le Soir,' based in Brussels, Belgium, reports the Russians may have been invited to return to Cuba.
If the report turns out to be true, it will be the first time since the end of the old Soviet Union in 1991. During that period, Cuba was under the direct political direction of the Communist bloc.
Reporting from Havana, the Le Soir correspondent said Russia is considering opening a Navel Base on the Caribbean island near the United States. There was no time table mentioned.

A LATIN AMERICAN IN BRUSSELS

Dear Friends,
A long-time ago, a Latin American leader, Victor Raul de la Torre of Lima, Peru, said Brussels--the capital of Belgium--was a favorite gathering place for him and others like him to discuss politics.
Here is at least one reason to suggest why his point should be considered.
It was found on the edge of town near TRAM number 94's last stop, a part of the city's huge transportation system.
Within sight and a short walking distance from the stop is a huge pink marble statue of Jose de San Martin, a soldier and stateman who helped lead revolutions against Spain's rule in Argentina in 1812, Chile in 1818 and Peru in 1821.
The secret, if there is one, may be found in writing on the statue itself:
He lived in Brussels seven years because of "hospitality given him in Brussels between 1824 and ending in 1931."
Argentina, his home-country, officially recognized their gratitude with the statue in June of 1998, one hundred years after Spain's rule ended in the hemisphere in 1898.

The Caribbean is a terribly long-way from what happened on June 6, 1944. On that date, three million America, British and Canadian soldiers landed on the north coast of France to start the end of German-controlled Europe during World War II.
We decided to write about it anyway despite the geographical difference for a simple reason. If what was launched on “D-Day” had failed, this area of the world today would be dramatically different.
In other words, this is one small way of celebrating that historic moment in the name of all of us living in the Caribbean.
The Allied invasion of Normandy on France’s north coast was the first major step taken to end World War II less than two years later on Sept. 2, 1945. On that date, Hitler’s Nazi Germany, Italy and Japan officially surrendered.

Here is a good example of how Puerto Ricans can and should be used in the service of the United States. In our opinion, this could be expanded and here’s why: they understand the importance for knowing a second language and culture.
First an example of what we’re talking about.
Puerto Rican–born Jose A. Rodriguez, Jr., led all U.S. counterterrorism operations and oversaw the use of procedures—including water boarding--that obtained vital intelligence to safeguard the nation from future attacks like the Sept. 11, 2001 New York City attack.
“The actions we took in the aftermath of 9/11 were harsh but necessary and effective,” he is quoted as saying in a number of publications and interviews.
Rodriguez worked 31 years for the Central Intelligence Agency [CIA] starting in 1976. Before retiring, he was Chief of Staff of the Counter Terrorism Center (CTC).
There the CTC on his order arrested three key terrorists: Abu Zubaydah, Khalid Sheikh Muhammed and Abu Faraj al-Libbi. They provided information needed to find Osama bin Ladin, the man who ordered the 9/11 attack.
Navy Seals killed bin Ladin on May 2, 2011, a year ago in Pakistan.

CUBA WANTS U.S. EMBARGO LIFTED

Cuban dictator Raul Castro has complained publicly the U.S. economic embargo is blocking the Caribbean island’s development.
Castro voiced his position openly to Roman Catholic Pope Benedict XVI during his a three-day visit to Havana, Cuba’s capital city.
According to a Cuban exile living in San Juan, Puerto Rico, here is what Castro was really saying.“We want the United States to provide the kind of economic support to Cuba like the old Soviet Union once did.”
Starting in October 1960 after Cuba nationalized property owned by U.S. citizens and corporations, the embargo was launched and then strengthened on Feb. 7, 1962
It will end when Cuba declares an end to Communist rule and its dictatorship over 11 million island residents.
Fidel Castro, Cuba’s first Communist dictator and the brother of the current one, imposed Communist rule on this Caribbean island on Jan. 1, 1959.

HAITI'S PROPOSED ARMY

Haiti is being threatened by former soldiers wanting to reestablish the kind of power and control over this Caribbean nation when former Presidents Francois [Papa Doc] Duvalier and his son, Jean Claude Duvalier, served as presidents for life or dictators.
That’s what is being reported in the country’s French-language newspaper, Le Matin.
Newly elected President Michel Martelly has called for the building of an Army to deal with the challenge. Haiti currently has a Haitian National Police but no army.
The conflict comes at a critical moment. This nation is still recovering from a Jan. 12, 2010 quake that left as many as 300,000 dead.

Haiti is being threatened by former soldiers wanting to reestablish the kind of power and control over this Caribbean nation when former Presidents Francois [Papa Doc] Duvalier and his son, Jean Claude Duvalier, served as presidents for life or dictators.
That’s what is being reported in the country’s French-language newspaper, Le Matin.
Newly elected President Michel Martelly has called for the building of an Army to deal with the challenge. Haiti currently has a Haitian National Police but no army.
The conflict comes at a critical moment. This nation is still recovering from a Jan. 12, 2010 quake that left as many as 300,000 dead.

It’s not surprising.
Once Henrique Capriles won a landslide win to be Venezuela’s Democratic Unity coalition's primary to run against President Hugo Chavez in October, government reaction was quick and expected.
One could conclude Chavez and his followers faced a serious challenge to the president’s chances for re-election.
In any kind of open society what Chavez and his followers said would be called unacceptable and over the top at the very least.
Here is why.
Chavez said: “I will pulverize him.”
Congressional leader and former Chavez military comrade Diosdado Cabello added: "We know he [Capriles] is the candidate of imperialism, of capitalism and the right wing."
They claim the 39-year-old state governor is both "bourgeois" and "fascist," a direct reference to Germany’s Adolf Hitler.
Capriles is the grandson of Jews who survived the World War Two Holocaust in Poland.
And a senior Chavez aide released a cartoon showing Capriles in pink shorts with a Nazi Swastika on his arm.

After attending the inaugural ceremony of President Daniel Ortega, sworn in for the second time in Nicaragua, he traveled to Cuba, where he met with Fidel Castro.
Ahmadineyad talked with the other five at the Ortega ceremony.
They were the current and Guatemala’s President-elect, Alvaro Colom and Otto Perez Molina; President Maurico Funes of El Salvador; and President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela.
Politically, the meeting was a volatile mix of Latin America’s political left and the Middle East’s Islamic extremists.
It was Ahmadineyad’s area of the world that planned and carried out the Sept. 11, 2001 attack in New York City against the United States.
